Dad always tried to step out of photographs. He said the children should be in front, not him. It became a family joke. We had dozens of pictures where someone had to call, "Dad... stay where you are!" Looking through old albums now, I realise those photographs became precious because he was finally standing in them with us.

Elias always said the tomatoes tasted better when the grandchildren helped water them, even though half the water usually ended up on each other instead of the plants.
